The red blood cells absorb various amounts of light depending on the amounts of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin that are present. The light reflected by the blood cells is transmitted through a second optical fiber to the photodetector, which converts light intensity into electrical signals for transmission to the microprocessor. After the microprocessor receives the electrical signals, the light intensities from oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin are analyzed by detecting color changes in the red blood cells, and a ratio is computed. The SVO2 value that is displayed on the oscilloscope represents a composite of measurements of multiple samples and is updated every few seconds. monitoring capabilities in addition to fiber optics for transmitting light (Figure 1), an optical module that contains a light-emitting source and a photodetector, and a microprocessor to analyze reflected light. Reflectance spectrophotometry is used to differentiate oxygenated blood from deoxygenated blood in the PA. From the distal end of the PA catheter, light-emitting diodes transmit pulsating light of various waveProtocolsforPractice

Kinetics of oxygen uptake at the onset of exercise near or above peak oxygen uptake.

We tested the hypothesis that kinetics of O(2) uptake (VO(2)) measured in the transition to exercise near or above peak VO(2) (VO(2 peak)) would be slower than those for subventilatory threshold exercise. Eight healthy young men exercised at approximately 57, approximately 96, and approximately 125% VO(2 peak). Data were fit by a two- or three-component exponential model and with a semilogarith...

Oxygen Kinetics and Heart Rate Response during Early Recovery from Exercise in Patients with Heart Failure

Background. The purpose of this study was to assess the post-exercise O(2) uptake and heart rate response in patients with heart failure (HF) in comparison to healthy individuals. Methods and Results. Exercise testing of all subjects was conducted according to the RITE-protocol. The study subjects were classified according to their peak oxygen uptake (peak VO(2)) in four groups: healthy individ...

Qualitative Monitoring to Support Pro-Active VO Management

The paper aims to contribute to the development of pro-active Virtual Organization (VO) management. A method called “VO qualitative monitoring” is proposed based on the analysis and monitoring of VO success factors. The approach is applicable especially for VOs which have abstract objectives (difficult to measure quantitatively) and require personal and organizational commitment. Also the first...

Prognostic value of changes over time in exercise capacity and echocardiographic measurements in patients with chronic heart failure.

AIMS This study sought to examine the predictive values of changes over time in exercise capacity and echocardiographic measurements of ventricular dimensions or function in predicting mortality in patients with chronic heart failure. METHODS AND RESULTS Sixty-two patients with chronic heart failure (58 men, mean [+/-SD] age 60+/-10 years, mean peak oxygen consumption (VO(2)) 18.2+/- 5.9 ml. ...

Phosphorescence quenching microrespirometry of skeletal muscle in situ.

We have developed an optical method for the evaluation of the oxygen consumption (Vo(2)) in microscopic volumes of spinotrapezius muscle. Using phosphorescence quenching microscopy (PQM) for the measurement of interstitial Po(2), together with rapid pneumatic compression of the organ, we recorded the oxygen disappearance curve (ODC) in the muscle of the anesthetized rats. A 0.6-mm diameter area...

Influence of phase I duration on phase II VO2 kinetics parameter estimates in older and young adults.

Older adults (O) may have a longer phase I pulmonary O(2) uptake kinetics (Vo(2)(p)) than young adults (Y); this may affect parameter estimates of phase II Vo(2)(p). Therefore, we sought to: 1) experimentally estimate the duration of phase I Vo(2)(p) (EE phase I) in O and Y subjects during moderate-intensity exercise transitions; 2) examine the effects of selected phase I durations (i.e., diffe...
